Summer holidays 2006 – Spain

We did not have much planned for the summer on the holiday front. Perhaps some camping. Then, at our usual breakfast joint, we were offered the use of a villa in Spain.

Quick booking with Ryan Air, Hertz cars, and some airport parking and we were off.

Unfortunately, the Thursday we were due to fly out was the day of a huge security alert at UK airports. Fortunately, my mother-in-law called us before we left for the airport and told us about a ban on ALL hand luggage (other than passport and other essential travel documents).

Sadly, it was not a great break. The villa was a “town-terrace” in a huge new concrete build and had a sewage smell problem. We left the villa and headed 400km south into the hills and found an ok hotel with a swimming pool.

Very Spanish small town but, we found, just not our thing. Spanish food turns out not to our liking and the landscape looked pretty arrid – time of year we were told but have seen film of other seasons and not that impressed (we like lush green pastures – Scotland like).
