My first Audi

I thought, back in November, that I had found the right car when I returned to the old style Mercedes S-Class. Several months on an I found myself taking a contract that required me to travel over the Brecon Beacons every week. One trip with Lucy convinced us we did not have the right car. This time, we decided to go for both some luxury and fantastic driving capability able to handle with ease very windy roads and adverse weather conditions. After trying not a lot of cars, we came to an Read more […]

Back to old style Mercedes

I have just bought a 1993 Mercedes S-Class LWB S500 W140, with 85,000 miles on the clock. Cost me £2800 ($4372). It was a joy to look out of my bedroom window the following morning and see it sat at the back of the rest of the family vehicles. A great trick of perspective makes it look smaller than the other cars, until you start to adjust and notice its size against the large double garage I parked it next to. This is my second W140. I had a later model SWB S280 around 10 years ago that I Read more […]

Used car purchased nearly on a whimProbably not the best way to buy a car, but I was getting concerned since leaving permanent employment in June and returning my company car that I was too reliant on a recently purchased scooter that would not be practical for longer journey or journeys in bad weather. If I get a client not located near to a railway station, then I will really need a car and do not want to be running around trying to find something suitable at the last moment. What I would really Read more […]

Computing AntiquitiesI like change. Change for change's sake in many cases, providing the change is to bring something new to the table such as improved speed, additional features, more flexibility. I am a geek, and I really like technology. When friends wax lyrical over a classic car, I am cataloguing the disadvantages (I have learnt to do this in my head rather than aloud): no bluetooth, lack of ABS, poor fuel economy, less comfort, poor safety, etc. Similarly, old computers hold little appeal Read more […]

Fine refunded thanks to Social Networking

£60 parking fine being refunded thanks to a Google+ post. I left my car for a couple of hours for a full valet at the Park Inn hotel in Telford. A month later I received a bill from Parking Eye for £100 (£60 if pay quickly) for parking on the hotel’s car park without paying. As I had no proof of the valet, I decided to pay up. I know many now argue that private fines have no standing and also realise I could have appealed but frankly I did not want the hassle, and these things can drag on Read more […]

Ouch.! £60 fine in the post today from Parking Eye for a visit to the Park Inn. I left my car for a little over two hours for a full valet (it really did need it). I assumed you did not have to do anything parking wise if you simply left it with those guys. They were fairly busy and said they would need it for at least an hour.No receipt do no proof. I thought about appealing but that would probably take me past a payment discount deadline an expose me to the standard £100 fine. Not a happy bunny. Read more […]

Peace of mind for valuables at the gym

I have for some time been concerned about leaving valuables in the locker at my gym (DW Fitness) – not specifically because of any problems reported at the branches I use but because lockers in such locations are clearly vulnerable and there have been reports of gyms being targeted by thieving gangs. There are not many portable lock boxes with movement alarms around. Frankly, this is the only one I found that looked at all substantial in the UK. It is the Xitel mySAFE. I purchased two, one Read more […]

Dangerous tyres

My company car had a service last Friday and when the car was returned I was told in no uncertain terms that three of the tyres were illegal and the fourth was not far off. I was given the number of the mobile service and given the message from the leasing company to use that number or get myself to a Kwik-Fit (which they prefer to use for tyres rather than letting the service garage do it). The service was a little over due, but I have been busy. The leasing company had advised that many services Read more […]
