Selling our home

I knew this day would come. The day when I reached a certain age, the kids had grown up and left home, and I wanted to consider working less and having more fun. Time to DOWNSIZE. A large farmhouse style property with 7 bedrooms is clearly too much for a late-middle-age couple. So, it is time to sell the house and move into something more humble. You can’t just slap up a for sale sign these days and have the estate agent pop your details into their window. No. Nowadays you have to prepare Read more […]

New digs for both daughters

As a parent, I absolutely want my children to grew up, become successful, fulfilled, happy adults in their own right, able to stand on their own two feet. As a parent, I dread the moment my children grow up and leave home. That time has come to pass. Over the last two weeks both of our children have left home. Not like they did to go to university but properly, renting their own places (the first homes of their own) and starting new jobs, both in London. Whilst I am very happy for them, I cannot Read more […]

A new year and a year of change

This year will be one for change for the Moore family. Hopefully, both Zoë and Alexandra will graduate from their universities, following hard on the heels of their mother, Lucy, who graduated with a 2.1 in Physiotherapy last year. Zoë has a vague plan to find somewhere to live with her boyfriend in North London. Of course that depends on finding suitable work, not the easiest of tasks for graduates these days, but the specialist nature of her course with Imperial College will help (hopefully). Read more […]

I've tried this with home brew PCs but the idea of whole data centres running this way is impressive. Cloud computing companies are preparing to dunk their servers in vats of oil via Google+ Read more […]

Loss of a laptop

There is a widely accepted principle that Men (or more specifically, male brained humans) are poor at multi-tasking. It seems this applies when repacking after going through airport security scanners where I was trying to, put my shoes back on, rethread my belt, recover things from coat/jacket pockets to trousers, put laptop back in cabin luggage, talk to someone on my phone and given them some information i looked up on the phone. On getting home last Thursday evening, I opened by cabin bag to discover Read more […]

Solving the ecommerce home delivery problem for online shoppers

I am really glad to have tried out ByBoxUk and will be signing up for the annual plan (less than £1 per week) shortly as it solves a key home delivery problem for me. The likes of Home Delivery Network (now called Yodel) are very unreliable for home deliveries in my experience, delivering at strange times, being difficult to contact, hard to track, handling goods poorly at times, and certainly reporting delivery attempts that do not seem to fit with my observations. Like most people with Read more […]

Time to change broadband supplier

Switched our broadband from BT Total Broadband option 3 (unlimited) just before Christmas to Plusnet (a BT subsidiary) as they offered a better deal and I had been using them happily in my flat in Swansea for the last couple of years. Same wires, but throughput has been higher on Plusnet, better traffic management overall I guess.  The switch over was not handled that well, but it was a strange arrangement. Basically, I contacted them initially to give notice of cancellation of the service to my Read more […]

A journey to Gym & Swim

I never thought I would say the following … I enjoy going to the gym. I have been going for around a month now, pretty much everyday for at least half-an-hour. I have also often followed a gym session with a relaxed swim. My diet has also changed. I have had practically no really bad food since I started going to the gym. Weight has started to reduce, a few kilos already, and my body shape is changing. The warning These incredible changes have been brought about as a direct reaction on my part Read more […]

Dangerous tyres

My company car had a service last Friday and when the car was returned I was told in no uncertain terms that three of the tyres were illegal and the fourth was not far off. I was given the number of the mobile service and given the message from the leasing company to use that number or get myself to a Kwik-Fit (which they prefer to use for tyres rather than letting the service garage do it). The service was a little over due, but I have been busy. The leasing company had advised that many services Read more […]
