Sad to say, I speak only English and half-hearted attempts over the years to address this have, unsurprisingly, come to nothing. In fact, I had trouble learning to speak English in the first place (not that you would notice these days fortunately).I was fascinated by a post on Reddit about learning languages as one gets older: http://redd.it/1kjocf  reddit: the front page of the internet via Public RSS-Feed of Stuart Moore. Wow, a PM communityI am looking forward to learning a lot from this community and making some new friends. I left IBM in June 2013 after 11 years with them (joined when they acquired the consulting arm of PricewaterhouseCoopers). I spent most of the latter half of my time leading large complex system integration projects.Whilst I have used many PM methodologies, including IBM's own, unlike many of the staff I managed, I never got around to doing external exams (PMI et al), I think maybe because Read more […]

My wife is learning physiotherapy (on final year of degree course) and the stories she tells me of people in long term pain suffering side effects from the pain medication or taking the pain makes my blood go cold. Maybe the boffins have a new option on the way: "‘Freezer burn’ method numbs painful nerves" http://feedly.com/k/ZlPjIc via Google+ https://plus.google.com/108083406947097710872/posts/CeHVBs4U6gX Read more […]

Teaching photography

I was pleased to spend some time around the Swansea Marina with a work colleague last Saturday, and give him an introduction to photography with a DSLR camera. There is much more to photography than learning the mechanics of operating a camera, but it gets much easier to start to learn the art of photography once you have gained a decent basic understanding of how to operate a camera and how to control the elements of an exposure to achieve certain desirable outcomes. It is somewhat akin to learning Read more […]

Learning photography online

(from a reply I posted on a facebook photography group) There is a huge amount of material online to help individuals learn and improve their photography including academic course leading to recognised qualifications with a number of universities and photography organisations. The most important thing you can do though, is take photographs. Photography is an art and a skill, and not something you can just learn. You have to practice. Google is your friend. There are lots of basic introductions Read more […]

Am I undereducated?

I find myself in an odd position. My wife has just started an Access course at a local college with the objective of starting at University on an undergraduate physiotherapy course the following year, at the same time as our older daughter is scheduled to go to University (unless she gets cold feet, or decided to take a year out) and a year ahead of the younger daughter (who has just started her A levels at another local college). I have no formal education planned for my future. Many of my colleagues Read more […]

Guiding a child’s education

It is always hard to know whether or not you have done the right thing for your kids. Around eight years ago we moved from Caterham in Surrey to my home town in Shropshire. There were a number of reasons for doing this, not least being quality of life, but the main two were: * get to know my parents before they passed away * have the same good school opportunities that I did Sadly, both my parents have passed away, but not before the kids got to know they reasonably well, especially my mother Read more […]

A week in Swansea

I moved onto a new client this week, based in Swansea (the obvious guess applies). There is already a large and well established team there from several companies working in some degree of harmony. I was originally expecting to benefit from a couple of weeks handover from my predecessor but as it turned out, this was not to be so and I was dropped into the deep end. Not as deep as it could have been though as many people were still on holiday and there was another colleague who had worked closely Read more […]
