Mac or PC for students

I posted the reply below to a student looking for advice. I do not envy you making a choice on limited funds. I have two daughters, both of whom graduated from university last year, and got through two cheap laptops each. Those two laptops were cheaper (together) than a comparable Apple Mac. I had to provide a considerable amount of support to them over their three years on securing their laptops, making repairs, carrying out rebuilds, sorting out configuration issues. They used several low cost Read more […]

Why I use a Mac instead of more for your money PC

I recently switched from PC (Lenovo running 8.1 Pro 64 bit) to a top spec Macbook. I know Windows very well. I used to build my own PCs. I expect to reinstall Windows OS every six months. I absolutely understand the specification/price argument. For most purposes though, the higher specification hardware is not called for. Such hardware is over specified. Maybe not if you are doing complex 3d CAD, video processing, etc, but not for general Office and development work. More important for me than Read more […]

Back to Mac

I have switched, properly, to a Mac. I know you can get more for your money with a PC (for which, read Windows laptop these days), but the overall integrity, reliability, and quality of the Apple computers is in my humble opinion unsurpassed although Lenovo’s Carbon X1 comes close. Already, in work situations, I have found the Mac much easier to use without lots of additional utilities and complex configuration than any Windows machine I have ever used. I am still going through the learning curve Read more […]

Resolved search problem in Windows 8.1Typing in the name of a program or file for the computer to search for whether on the desktop popup of the modern interface, and opening folders in some places was giving me nothing. I had to manually walk through the directory trees to find things. The linked page has, amongst other things, a .reg file you can use to update your Windows registry file back to the default settings for Windows Search (there are loads of other reg files as well). Worked instantly Read more […]

I like Windows 8Works really well on decent laptop with a touch screen once you get used to the various swiping gestures (mostly not very discoverable – you have to look out for some tips). For my desktop machine, I have an older touch monitor that does not support all the gestures and the surface is not level with the surround so gestures that start off screen do not work – I have been thinking about getting a Logitech Touchpad to get around this. Most of the time though, I find keyboard shortcuts Read more […]

Thought I would try the Microsoft Hyper-V Client out that is built into WIndows 8. Then realised that I have the basic not Pro version of Windows 8, and need to upgrade to get Hyper-V and a few other things.Microsoft want £99 to u/g. Amazon offer the upgrade for £79. Annoyingly though, I can upgrade from an older version of Windows (none Pro versions) to Windows 8 Pro for just £49. Now, I have lots of old licenses around, but do not want to have to reinstall everything.Guess I shall have to stick Read more […]

+David Ferriday+Zoë Moore mentioned that the new Windows 8 laptop you received for your birthday is not a touch screen. Cheaper but not very convenient.I recommend you look at Stardock for a replacement start button and ability to boot directly to the desktop and also at their modernmix addon. There are free alternatives to these cheap products but these are well worth the money. Free 30 day trials available. Also, you might want to take a look at the Logitech Wireless Touchpad as another option Read more […]

I have really tried to get on with Windows 8 on my desktop. I have two screens, one of which is a touch screen (not flush though, and only support 2 point multi-touch) but it is all just slowing me down too much. I want my start button back!Did a search for advice from anyone in my technology circle, and low, plenty of recommendations. This one from +Nirmal Balachandran  took my fancy in particular.(Worth mentioned that as part of the installation process, there is a default option to install "Advanced Read more […]
